Any virtual environment such as World of Warcraft or Second Life is conceived of and rendered by computer programs as an array of polygonal shapes that merge to represent the three-dimensional surfaces of the landscape. The more complex the environment, the smaller the polygons, and the more there are.

“Polygon” depicts a mundane experience in the real world – a simple walk around the non-quadrilateral block where the artist lives – as an infinitely fractal, organic experience… which is subsequently filtered through the intensely reductive algorithms of video compression for presentation online.

It is both a study in contrasts and an experiment, to see how much of the organic experience survives the translation.
—
Kevin Obsatz is a film and video artist living in Minneapolis who works in a range of time-based media, including multi-source video installation and hand-processed black and white 16mm film. More of his work can be found at www.videohaiku.com

This film is not autobiographical. It does not judge nor condone. It is based on the real life collective experiences of various close friends. When it comes to the internet, there are very unique & specific circumstances that have become the exclusive property of homosexual men…for better or worse. This film is a humorous nod to those situations. It leaves the options open to interpretation and the decisions to those who live it.
—
Jaime Carrera is a dishwasher at Chowgirls Killer Catering. He also dabbles in photography, music, film & performance. Jaime is in the midst of curating his first show Peligro at Patrick’s Cabaret. He lives in Powderhorn with his boyfriend Nick and his cats Henri & Roxie.

Tyler Jensen is a filmmaker out of NE Minneapolis. He lives with his boyfriend, Seth and their dog, Moose. He’s terrified of public spelling. He is currently at working making 30 Films in 30 Days.

The Lost Bits is a work created using material found online and narrated by people with false identities. It’s a site-specific work for the Cedar Lake bike trail between Lake Calhoun and downtown Minneapolis. From your smartphone, download the free SCVNGR app and get your bike to the Rustica bakery in the Calhoun Village parking lot. When there, open the app and search for “The Lost Bits Bike Trail.”

The whole adventure is about 3 miles one way. Get out of your cubicle, and go at your own pace.

—

Sean Kelley-Pegg is a founding member of Skewed Visions. He is currently working on a number of smartphone-based performances over the course of the next few years.

Flowers for Algorithm is a collection of seven audio-visual allegories. Each allegory tells a small tale about the user experience. In their simplest form these allegories are physical corporeal analogs to what is often referred to as virtual. They steal from the profound and give to the trivial. They are first person stories, they are about you and you are the author.
—
Noah Keesecker is a composer, multimedia artist and idea-guy. In addition to his purely musical compositions he makes video, dance, text, performance art, interactive installation and animation. His works have been programmed and performed on concerts and at festivals throughout the United States and Europe. In 2008 he was the recipient of a McKnight Composer Fellowship.

As part of Northern Spark: a nuit blanche, Skewed Visions presented Please Remain Seated, overnight from June 4 at 8:55pm to June 5 at 5:28am. Skewed Visions’ contribution to this event was a set of performances tailored for the 15 festival buses and their drivers, along the routes and for the duration of Northern Spark: a Nuit Blanche. Giving riders a glimpse into the inner life of driving and being driven as they navigate the city, Please Remain Seated explored the forgotten spaces of a system of public transit and the dynamics within a system of public service.

Created by the three Skewed Visions principles Charles Campbell, Gulgun Kayim, and Sean Kelley-Pegg, Please Remain Seated ranged from short enigmatic pronouncements to longer monologues, from the haiku of paying the fare to the historical epic of the cross-town journey. These performances offered rider-audiences insight into the world of bus drivers, the routes of the buses, and an opportunity to experience the mystery, intimacy and the terror of missing your stop from the other side of the steering wheel.

The 15 Please Remain Seated audio pieces are now available here.

As part of Northern Spark: a nuit Blanche, Skewed Visions will be joining a long roster of artists making work over night in the Twin Cities as part of this festival. Our little contribution will be making work for all the shuttle buses that run between and among the festival sites on the evening of June 4.

We’re working on it now. In the meantime, brush your teeth and take a nap: this is from dusk until dawn.
