The Rubber Room

The Rubber Room was a work-in-progress showing of a 24-hour site specific installation at Southwest High School in Minneapolis beginning May 6th at 7:00pm and ending May 7th at 7:00pm. Audience members were welcome to come and go whenever they pleased during that time period. There was also a live stream of The Rubber Room online, so people unable to attend could also watch the performance.

Rubber Rooms, or “temporary reassignment centers,” are holding places for “incompetent” teachers in the New York City Public School system. The Rubber Room incorporated true stories from teachers, current union contract issues and the overall drudgery of spending too much time in the same room. This project was a creative collaboration headed by Gülgün Kayim and twelve students from the University of Minnesota.

Your profile on the Rubber Room is not limited to NYC but is pervasive throughout the North American Continent. This would include: Pasadena and Los Angeles. There is considerable material here which I hope will lend itself to other productions with echoes fromEugene Ionosco,Artuad,Kafka and other artists from Theatre of the Absurd.
